Event Details
3-2-1... Blast off! Join us at the library for a high-flying STEAM adventure where we turn ordinary pool noodles into extraordinary rocket launchers. This hands-on program combines engineering, physics, and outdoor fun as participants design and test their own aerodynamic fliers.
Program Activities
- Engineering the Rocket: Transform a section of foam noodle into a rocket body by crafting and attaching custom stabilizer fins.
- Launcher Mechanics: Learn to build a powerful "luggage-tag" rubber band mechanism that uses tension to propel your rocket forward.
- Design Challenges: Experiment with different fin shapes, materials, and rubber band strengths to see which design flies the farthest or fastest.
- The Science of Flight: Explore the roles of thrust, gravity, and drag as you observe the path of your rocket through the air.
Materials Provided
- Foam pool noodles (pre cut into 9-12 inch sections)
- High-tension rubber bands
- Colorful duct tape for decoration and reinforcement
- Cardboard or craft foam for fins
Safety & Launching
These rockets are lightweight, safe, and can be used both indoors and outdoors. To launch, simply hook a finger into the rubber band, pull back firmly on the foam body, and release to see it soar.
