Event Details
Build a welcoming retreat for our neighborhood pollinators and creepy-crawly companions at our Bug Motel Workshop! This eco-friendly craft allows young nature enthusiasts to create a cozy habitat for beneficial insects like ladybugs, solitary bees, and beetles.
Using a variety of recycled and natural materials, participants will assemble their own "minibeast mansions" to take home and place in their gardens. This activity is a fantastic way to encourage curiosity about local biodiversity and learn how even the smallest creatures help our ecosystem thrive.
Activity Highlights
- Construct a Framework: Use recycled items like milk cartons, plastic bottles, or small wooden boxes to create a sturdy "motel" structure.
- Design Custom "Rooms": Fill your motel with diverse textures including hollow bamboo, pinecones, twigs, dry leaves, and corrugated cardboard to attract different guests.
- Decorate & Personalize: Add a touch of flair to your motel with colorful markers or stickers before it opens for business.
- Eco-Education: Discover which bugs prefer "high-rise" twigs versus "ground-floor" moss while learning about their vital roles in pollination and pest control.
Suggested Materials to Bring
While the library will provide basic supplies, we encourage you to bring:
- Clean, empty milk cartons or large plastic bottles.
- Cardboard tubes (toilet paper or paper towel rolls).
- Natural treasures from your backyard like unique sticks, bark, or pinecones.
